Bhutan received the Green Destination's Silver Award at the
ITB Berlin, the world's biggest tourism fair, held on March 6, 2024. The award recognizes exceptional contributions to sustainable tourism through destination stewardship, inspiring practices and effective stakeholder management. Bhutan won Gold for the same category in 2019.
The selection was conducted by the Green Destinations Story Awards International Jury of Experts. The evaluation includes 75 criteria such as level of innovation and best practices that can be implemented in other countries.
Bhutan's commitment to sustainable tourism backed by its policy of high value-low volume, continue to inspire tourism practices around the world. As one of the only carbon negative countries in the world, Bhutan's exemplary conservation efforts and policies as well as its pristine environment make it one of the greenest destinations in the world.
The certification is accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) for adhering to the highest standards of transparent, objective and evidence-based certification.
