The Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana is one of the most auspicious event in the Buddhist calendar. The day marks the five major events in the life of the Buddha including his enlightement under a Bodhi tree, on a full moon night. In Bhutan, the day is associated with the Buddha’s conception, birth, victory over evil forces and enlightenment. On this day, it is believed that all the right circumstances, causes and conditions in the universe have converged to generate positive outcome. 
Therefore, Bhutanese all across the country devote themselves in religious activities such as chanting mantras and prayers, visiting monasteries, and circumambulation and prostrations. The positive deeds are believed to multiply due to the deep spiritual significance of the day and the convergence of positive energy. 
The day marks the death of Siddhartha Gautama, an Indian Prince who renounced the comfort and luxury of his palace to seek spiritual enlightenment, and the birth of Buddha Sakyamuni, the awakened one, after his enlightenment. 
It is important to avoid non-virtuous activities and engage in positive actions to make use of the power of the day. Seeking inspiration from the Buddha and his enlightened activities, Bhutanese from all walks of life engage in activities to benefit others and pray for all sentients beings to be free from sufferring.
